Spectrum Coverage Gap Reduction

Low-band spectrum remains the foundation of the network. It serves as the base layer of
coverage and defines the footprint for carriers. Today, 600 MHz spectrum has clear
propagation advantages over 700 and 850 MHz—traveling further and penetrating buildings deeper than other bands.

Horizontal Beam Width Optimization

Recent advancements in four-port low-band antenna technology, specifically the JMA
Macro MX04 antenna family, have closed this gap. Engineered with four dedicated low-band ports, these solutions deliver maximum efficiency across the entire sector coverage area. Coverage is improved by 15 percentage points, now bringing 750 MHz within just 10% of the 600 MHz coverage footprint. This allows carriers relying on 700 and 850 MHz as their primary coverage layer to compete effectively without changing their core spectrum strategy.

When upgrading sites, maintaining sector consistency is critical. Some product designs
attempt to boost peak gain by narrowing the horizontal beam width, sometimes reducing it down to about 60 degrees. However, this approach can introduce unintended coverage gaps.

The JMA design approach maintains a true 65-degree horizontal beam width. By doing so, our products prevent new coverage gaps when upgrading the network, resulting in stronger overall performance without sacrificing sector consistency.

Standalone Network Coverage Matching

The shift to 5G Standalone (SA) has completely changed the requirements for the 850 MHz band. In the past, when both 700 MHz and 850 MHz were utilized for LTE, the goal was simply for 700 MHz to cover as much as possible with 850 MHz following. Typically, legacy hex-port antennas have only about an 83% 850 MHz coverage overlap with 700 MHz.

Today, 850 MHz must be optimized for 5G Standalone. JMA’s four-port antenna design has focused heavily on this requirement, improving the 850 MHz coverage overlap with 700 MHz from about 83% to 94%. This ensures that whether a customer is using LTE at 700 MHz or 5G at 850 MHz, the network experience is far more consistent.

Performance and Cost Summary

Many existing sites feature two separate hex-port antennas carrying both mid-band and
low-band. By consolidating these antennas into a single four-port low-band antenna,
carriers can free up tower space and reduce load, enabling the deployment of advanced
technologies like FD-MIMO for mid-band spectrum.
